"THE Examination of Joshua Roberts of Mumby in the said PARTS touching 
the Place of his last legal Settlement, taken upon Oath before us, two 
of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the said PARTS, the fourth 
Day of June 1799.

Who saith, that he is 46 years of age, his Place of Birth he knoweth not, 
that at the age of seventeen he was bound Apprentice to one John 
Hinchcliff of the Township of Clayton in the Parish of high Hoyland in the 
West Riding of the County of York, Clothier and that he served the 
whole term contained in his indentures which to the best of this 
examinant’s remembrance was either four or five years and that the said Joshua 
Roberts hath resided in Parish of Huttoft in the Parts of Lindsey and 
County of Lincoln, from the year 1794 to the year 1799 in a house 
belonging to one Thomas Needham the Overseer of the Poor of the Parish of 
Huttoft aforesaid for the yearly rent of three pounds and that he hath done 
no other act whereby he could gain a settlement save as aforesaid.

On August 26th of the same year (1799) Joshua, together with R. POWEL, 
Joseph OVERTON, William BROWN, Thomas YOUNG and William NEEDHAM 
petitioned the Bishop of Lincoln, certifying that Joshua’s house was to be 
used as a Methodist place of worship and requesting the Bishop to register 
it as such.
