Welcome to Genuki, Lincolnshire, Theddlethorpe Just CLOSE this window when you are finished From: Renee Redshaw in Melbourne, Australia ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Jenny Birmingham Old Leake - St.Mary A large structure on the main road north of Boston where there are many fine Fenland churches. Navigating the Wash sailors were probably architectural experts, able to distinguish one tower from another through the marsh mists. Today the church lies in a churchyard, it's character taken away by the practice of having the tombstones laid flat. The clerestory is one of the finest in Lincolnshire as with much of the church, attempting to rival it's Boston neighbour. The church originally was Norman and big, traces of it seen in the shafts at each end of the nave interior. It was rebuilt at the end of the 13th century with early and late decorated windows with more alterations and additions in the Perpendicular period. It has a wide and sunny nave and the restored chancel finds the openess of the nave too naked and resorts to opaque glass to shut out the world. Old Leake has what it claims are England's only poor-boxes hollowed out from a single log. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- *** Created: 14-August-2012 ***
